THE
CHAMBER
The
Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Alcoy is a Corporation constituted under Public
Law and groups together natural persons and body corporates who carry out commercial
and industrial activities within the limits of the municipality of Alcoy.
Currently,
Chambers of Commerce are regulated by the law known as a Ley 3/1993 Básica
de las Cámaras oficiales de Industria Comercio y Navegación de España
(Basic Law for Official Chambers of Industry, Commerce and Navigation of Spain) which
was fully ratified by the Spanish higher court known as the Tribunal Constitucional.
Sin
embargo la existencia de las Cámaras de Comercio en nuestro país es
mucho más antigua.
Nonetheless,
the existence of Chambers of Commerce in our country goes back a long time. The Alcoy
Chamber of Commerce and Industry dates from November 1886, when a group of Alcoy
businessmen met and resolved to create the chamber. The minutes of the meeting dated
January 27, 1887 reflect the formal approval given to the statutes and the first
board of directors was elected on February 6, 1887.
At
that time 120 entrepreneurs were members of the chamber according to the entries
dated February 14 1887 in the first Register Book.
More
than one century has passed since its inauguration and there are currently more than
4,000 registered members in the Alcoy Chamber of Commerce.
Throughout
the evolution of the economy in Alcoy, the presence of the Chamber of Commerce has
been permanent and it ha played a significant role in local development; it is the
wish of its current governing body to continue this mission.
Nonetheless,
as was the case in the beginning as it is now, little has changed and we can summarise
the Chamber's goals thus:
- The
representation, promotion and defence of the general interests of Commerce and industry.
- The
offering services to companies.
- To
act as advisory bodies and intermediaries in relation to matters concerning the various
Public Administrations.
